Shevanthie Goonesekera

Shevanthie Goonesekera is the author of the book 'Mount Lavinia, The Governor's Palace' which charted the 200 year history of a former British Governor's Residence that is now Mount Lavinia Hotel. The book was published in 2006 (a Paradise Isle Publication) now in a 2nd Edition (July 2016). Shevanthie is currently working on her second book documenting the life and influences of the Russian Artist, Alexander Sofronoff who lived in Ceylon for 13 years. She first presented a paper on this artist at the Decorative Arts Symposium in Colombo in August 2011 tracing his footsteps from his native Russia to China and to Ceylon. In March 2013 she was invited to speak at the Shanghai Literary Festival, where she unveiled one of the artist’s paintings of China. In November 2013 Shevanthie curated her first retrospective exhibition in London, showcasing 38 paintings by Sofronoff at the Russian Cultural Centre at the invitation of the Russian Ambassador. In January 2015 Shevanthie was invited to Jaipur by the Director of the City Palace Museum, where she presented an illustrated lecture of Sofronoff's journey through India in 1946 at the Maharaja of Jaipur's former hunting lodge close to the City Palace. In January 2017 Shevanthie began studying Russian Art at Birkbeck University, London and presented a paper on Russian Landscape Art at the famous Tretyakov Gallery during a study tour of Moscow. In 2021 she obtained her Masters in History of Art. Shevanthie is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and she is based in London. She has experience of curating events in London and has worked with a number of Sri Lankan and British writers showcasing their writing, creating a positive platform for Sri Lanka in the UK.
